Structure of the Department

The Department’s work covers a broad range of activities, and this is reflected in the nature of its structure.  It comprises a Management Advisory Committee, which advises the Secretary General on the overall operation of the Department, the Offices of the Minister and Ministers of State, and 7 divisions. Each division is led by an Assistant Secretary or a Director, and is supported by technical advisors where relevant. Also within the Department is the Local Government Audit Service which is led by a Director of Audit.

The divisions are responsible for the following areas:

  • Community
  • Corporate and Business Support
  • Housing
  • Environment
  • Local Government
  • Water and Planning
  • Met Éireann

Mission

The Department's overall mission is to pursue sustainable development by ensuring good quality housing in sustainable communities; protecting and improving water resources and the quality of drinking water; achieving a high quality environment with effective environmental protection; supporting democratic and responsive local government; promoting and supporting the development of communities and the community and voluntary Sector; ensuring that planning and building contributes to sustainable and balanced development; and monitoring, analysing and predicting Ireland's weather and climate.
